Kalshi vs Polymarket: Which Prediction Market Is Right for You?

Kalshi vs Polymarket compared — regulation, fees, markets, payouts, and who each platform is actually for. Updated 2026.

Published

Kalshi and Polymarket are the two names that come up whenever anyone talks about prediction markets in 2026. They look similar from the outside — you pay somewhere between 1¢ and 99¢ for a "yes" contract that settles to $1 if the event happens, $0 if it doesn't. Underneath, they're very different products. Here's the plain-English breakdown of which one fits which kind of user.

The one-line difference

Kalshi is a U.S., CFTC-regulated exchange that settles in U.S. dollars. Polymarket is a global, crypto-native market that settles in USDC on the Polygon blockchain. Kalshi is legal for U.S. residents; Polymarket officially isn't.

Regulation and legality

Kalshi is a Designated Contract Market (DCM) regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Every contract Kalshi lists is legally cleared for U.S. residents 18+ in most states. Deposits and withdrawals move through normal U.S. banking rails (ACH, debit card, wire).

Polymarket is not licensed for U.S. users. It settled with the CFTC in 2022 and geo-blocks U.S. IP addresses. U.S. residents who use it are working around the block, which carries real risk. Outside the U.S., Polymarket is open to anyone with a self-custody crypto wallet and USDC.

Fees

Polymarket charges no trading fee on the exchange itself — you only pay the on-chain gas to move USDC, which on Polygon is fractions of a cent. Kalshi charges a small per-contract fee that scales with how close the price is to 50¢. On a $50 trade at coin-flip odds, the Kalshi fee runs about $1.75. See our Kalshi fees explainer for the exact math.

For a U.S. trader, though, the fee comparison is academic — the choice is Kalshi with a small fee or nothing at all.

What kinds of markets exist

Both platforms cover the same broad categories — politics, economics, sports, culture, crypto, world events. Polymarket tends to have deeper volume on high-profile political and crypto contracts and moves faster on breaking news. Kalshi has broader coverage of U.S.-specific economic releases (CPI, Fed decisions, jobs reports), weather markets, and sports lines. Kalshi lists thousands of markets a month; Polymarket lists fewer, but the top markets carry huge liquidity.

Liquidity and price accuracy

Liquidity is where the two platforms diverge most. Polymarket's biggest political markets can hold tens of millions of dollars in open interest — the 2024 U.S. presidential market cleared over $3.7 billion in volume. Kalshi's biggest markets are smaller in raw dollars but tighter in spread because market makers and institutional participants quote them actively. For most everyday markets on either platform, the top-of-book spread is a few cents wide, and that spread costs you more than the fees.

Deposits, withdrawals, taxes

  • Kalshi: ACH, debit card, wire. Withdrawals hit your bank in 1-3 business days. Kalshi issues a 1099 for U.S. tax reporting. Winnings are taxed as ordinary income.
  • Polymarket: Fund with USDC in a self-custody wallet. No 1099, no withdrawal delay, no bank in the loop — but you're responsible for your own tax reporting and for the security of your own keys.

Who each platform is for

Use Kalshi if you're a U.S. resident, want to trade in dollars from a normal bank account, want tax paperwork handled for you, or care about regulatory protection.

Use Polymarket if you're outside the U.S., you're already comfortable with crypto self-custody, or you want the deepest liquidity on the biggest political or crypto contracts and are willing to trade in USDC.

How Bubba fits in

Bubba's Edge focuses on Kalshi. Every market on the exchange gets a plain-English read, every open market can be Edge-scored across five pillars, and every official Bubba estimate is graded against the real Kalshi settlement on a public ledger. We reference Polymarket as a crowd-check input on shared contracts, but the whole track record lives on Kalshi. See what's live on the Biggest Gaps page.
